TFN Application for International Students and New Arrivals

What Is a Tax File Number?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique 11-digit identifier issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It’s essential for working, studying, and accessing government services in Australia. Every person earning income—whether through employment, self-employment, or investments—must provide their TFN to their employer. Without one, you’ll face 45% withholding tax on income.

Who Needs to Apply?

International students, temporary visa holders (skilled migration, working holiday), and permanent residents all require a TFN before employment. Applicants must be at least 13 years old and hold a valid visa or be an Australian citizen. You can apply before or after arriving in Australia.

How to Apply Online

The easiest path is applying through the ATO’s online application portal. Visit ato.gov.au, navigate to “Apply for a TFN,” and complete the form. You’ll need your passport details, Australian contact address, visa number, and date of birth. The process takes 10–15 minutes. The ATO typically issues TFNs within 4 weeks; urgent applications (for work starting soon) can be processed faster.

Application in Person

If applying offline, visit an ATO office or Service Australia location with your original passport and visa. Bring proof of Australian address (utility bill, lease, or letter from accommodation provider). Processing time is the same: approximately 4 weeks.

After You Receive Your TFN

Once issued, your TFN appears in a letter from the ATO. Record it securely—you’ll need it for all tax returns, employment, bank accounts, and superannuation. Share it with your employer immediately to avoid the 45% withholding penalty. Update your tax file details if your visa status or address changes.

FAQ

Q: Can I work before getting my TFN? A: Legally, yes, but your employer must withhold 45% tax if you don’t provide a TFN. It’s better to apply first.

Q: How long does online TFN processing take? A: Typically 4 weeks; urgent requests may be faster.

Q: Is there a fee for TFN application? A: No, TFN applications are free.

Q: Can I use my TFN for other government services? A: Yes—superannuation, Centrelink (if eligible), banking, and Medicare all use your TFN.
