Tax Return Filing for International Students in Australia

Do International Students Need to File?

If you earned any income during the Australian financial year (1 July to 30 June), you must lodge a tax return—even if tax was withheld from your wages. International students on student visas are treated as Australian residents for tax purposes once in Australia, so normal tax law applies.

Income Thresholds and Obligations

You must file if your assessable income exceeds the tax-free threshold (AUD 18,200 as published by ATO for FY25-26) or if you received any franked investment income. Part-time work earnings, casual employment, and tutoring income all count. If you earned less than the threshold and no tax was withheld, filing is optional but recommended—you may be entitled to a refund.

What to Include in Your Return

List all sources of Australian income: wages from employment, tips, gig work, and interest from bank accounts. Claim deductible expenses related to earning that income—work uniforms (if you must launder them at your own cost), professional subscriptions, and certain study expenses directly related to work (such as a laptop for a work-from-home role). Keep receipts for all claimed deductions.

How to Lodge

The ATO offers three ways to file: online via myTax (easiest for employees), through a registered tax agent, or by completing a paper form. myTax is free and guides you step-by-step. You’ll need your TFN, employment income statements (group certificates), and any other income documentation.

Tax Return Deadline and Refunds

The deadline is 31 October each year. If you’ve overpaid tax through withholding, you’ll receive a refund within a few weeks of lodging. Many students receive refunds because their part-time wages resulted in excess withholding over the tax-free threshold.

Superannuation on Student Wages

Most student employers must contribute 11.5% of your ordinary time earnings into your superannuation. You can’t withdraw this until retirement unless you meet specific conditions (departing Australia permanently and holding certain visa types may qualify you for early withdrawal—ask your super fund).

FAQ

Q: Can I file a tax return before 1 November? A: Yes, you can lodge at any time after 1 July. Earlier filing means faster refunds.

Q: What if I worked only part of the financial year? A: You still file a return covering the full year, but only declare income for the months you worked.

Q: Do I need a tax agent to file? A: No, myTax is free and straightforward for most students. A tax agent is helpful if you have complex deductions.

Q: What happens if I don’t file? A: The ATO may pursue you for penalties and interest. It’s better to file even if you owe tax.
